What is Therapeutic Massage?

Therapeutic massage is one of the most popular forms of massage therapy. It is a combination of long, smooth strokes, kneading and circular movement on the superficial layers of muscle using oil or massage lotion. It can improve circulation, increase oxygen in the blood and release muscle toxins.

The treatment incorporates light and deep movements, allowing your mind and body to unwind through the release of tension from your muscles, also stimulating your body’s circulatory systems.

Therapeutic massage is one of the most popular treatments as it’s possibly the best-known type of massage in the West.

If it’s your first time receiving a massage or you don’t get a massage often, therapeutic massage is the best place to start.

What are the benefits of massage?

One of the most surprising benefits of getting a regular massage is the help in boosting your immune system. It helps reduce cortisol levels, which cause stress.

Many studies agree that massages also help to release endorphins which are the compounds known to reduce pain. You may even get a “feel good” effect for up to 48 hours !

Long-term benefits can include an overall feeling of well-being and increased confidence. It may also help to improve your muscle tone and the appearance of your skin.

For athletes, it is the perfect treatment to decrease muscle stiffness and reduce fatigue after intensive exercises. It is also proven to enhance athletic performances.

The benefits of therapeutic massage are many but most people choose it to relax and increase their well-being.

If you’ve never had a massage before, this is a good one to try first.

How often should I get a massage?

There is no right or wrong frequency to get a massage. It really depends on the problems or pains that you want to relieve. Below are some example of what is recommended based on different symptoms:

  • Suffering of back pain: the best treatment would be 30 minutes every 1 to 3 days for 12 sessions depending on the type of back pain
  • Suffering from neck pain: it would be suggested to have 2 or 3 massages of 60 minutes each for a few weeks.
  • For stress relief: a 60 minute massage every week will help lower your cortisol levels by 30% (your stress hormones) and raise your serotonin level by 28% (your happy brain chemical).
  • To improve your immunity, a 45 minute massage, 2 times a week for 5 weeks is recommended.

Therapeutic massage helps solve a wide variety of pains and problems. At Body in Balance, Hertfordshire, we will help you get the right treatment for your current problems.

What’s the difference between Therapeutic and Sports Massage?

While therapeutic massage concentrates mainly on promoting psychological and emotional well-being by releasing stress and increasing happiness, sports massage tends to focus more on a particular muscle group.

Sports massage also differs from the type of pressure applied on the body. While therapeutic massage is mostly about soft and long strokes, sports massage involves greater pressure on the body to work deeper into the tissues.

There is no “better” type of massage as it really depends on each person’s needs. Both types of massage help increase the range of motion around a joint or within a muscle.

You would choose sports massage over therapeutic massage if you’re looking to reduce muscle tension and tightness.

Therapeutic massage is more suited if you’re looking to reduce your stress levels, back and neck pains as well as increasing your immunity.
